Egusi Soup by Janice Okoh

Eastern Angles & Menagerie Theatre Company present Egusi Soup, a new play written by Janice Okoh and directed by Paul Bourne

Eastern Angles have been touring theatre productions to towns and villages all over the East of England since 1982.

Last year the company teamed-up with London-based theatre company Tiata Fahodzi to present a series of rehearsed readings by up-and-coming new British-African playwrights as part of Black History Month.

This collaboration was so successful that Eastern Angles, in association with Cambridge-based Menagerie Theatre Company, have decided to bring the work of Janice Okoh, new British-Nigerian playwright to the attention of local audiences.

This production will, once again, celebrate Black History Month.

Egusi Soup will tour to seven venues across the East of England between October 8th – 17th.

The tour will include a performance at Brightlingsea Community Centre on Tuesday 13th October at 7.30pm.

The playwright, Janice Okoh completed an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia and has written two plays for BBC Radio 4. Her first short play for the theatre was selected for the 2007 International Play Writing Festival.

Egusi Soup will be directed by Menageries’ Artistic Director, Paul Bourne, and will be staged as a rehearsed reading with the actors performing the play with ‘script-in-hand’.

At the beginning of the action we see two sisters, Anne and Grace, preparing to pack their bags. They are travelling from their home in London to the Nigerian city of Lagos to attend a family funeral – a visit that evokes all sorts of emotions.
