Dear All,

Many thanks for kicking the Bungay Film Club year off to a happy and prosperous start.  Splendid to see over 70 of you on a gloomy January Monday.  Glad to hear the applause at the end and to know that you enjoyed the film.  The next club screening will be MONSIEUR LAZHAR in our usual slot at the end of January, but in the meantime Fisher Cinema will be showing

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN the previous Monday.  See below for further information about both.

Monday 28 January at 7.30pm

MONSIEUR LAZHAR (12A)

Director: Philippe Falardeau. Canada 2011. 95 minutes. In French with English subtitles.

Engaging drama set in Montreal. Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag) is hired to step in after the sudden death of a primary school teacher. While helping his pupils deal with their grief, his own recent loss is revealed. Impressive performances from the amateur child actors and from Fellag, a comedian and himself an exile, add subtle humour to this perceptive film.

MONSIEUR LAZHAR is good. Really good. Ann Hornaday in The Washington Post.

Only the most obstreperous delinquent could fail to be charmed by MONSIEUR LAZHAR, in which an Algerian refugee plays ramshackle Mary Poppins to the kids at a Montreal primary.

Xan Brooks in The Guardian.

An Oscar nominee at last year’s Academy Awards with good reason, Falardeau’s film is moving, smart and sensitive. Terrific stuff, in short. Patrick Peters in Empire Magazine.

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12)

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristen Scott Thomas and Amr Waked.

This quirky romantic comedy from the  director of CHOCOLAT and the Oscar-winning screenwriter of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is sold by strong central performances. A visionary sheik believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on to it as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

Engaging, uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable. Alex Zane in Sun Online.

All seats £5.  Sorry, no reduction for BFC members at Fisher Cinema screenings.
