Free Heritage Open Days Norfolk

Still time to book Free Heritage Open Days events across Norfolk

The annual opportunity to explore Norfolk’s heritage for free returns in September (11th–14th), and there’s still time to request tickets for some of the pre-book events across the county.

Co-ordinated by Norwich’s Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART), this year’s Heritage Open Days offer over 230 free events including open buildings, guided tours and walks, heritage literary events, exhibitions and performances – across Norwich, Thetford, South Norfolk, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, North Norfolk and further afield.

This year marks the 20th anniversary nationwide of the Heritage Open Days scheme, and the 10th run in Norwich by HEART – so look out for new and exciting events to mark the anniversaries.

The pre-book events are filling up fast, but there are still tickets available for a wide range of pre-book events across Norfolk, including:

Free Heritage Open Days Norwich:

The Guildhall Literary Day Creative Writing Workshop: As part of HEART’s literary days at the Guildhall, this event will use the setting of the historic building, including the cells and undercroft, as a source of creative inspiration. The event, led by a graduate of the prestigious UEA MA in Creative Writing course, is for all ages, experience and abilities. It will encourage participants to produce a collaborative outcome on the themes of crime, punishment and justice.

Beating the Bounds Walk: A guided walk in central Norwich to track down around 50 historic parish boundary markers, and the chance to see if you can spot others too.

East Anglian Film Archive tours: A lunchtime screening by the East Anglian Film Archive showcasing a selection of short films for which music is a central part. The film show will include both film and video projections.

Norwich Cathedral: Pilgrimage Walk through the World of William of Norwich. A walk arranged by the East Anglian Pilgrimage Network will go around the edge of medieval Norwich, exploring the story of the young tanner’s apprentice found murdered on Mousehold Heath in 1144.

Free Heritage Open Days Broadland:

Holman House in Aylsham: New for 2014. Pluck up your courage to descend the precipitous steps into this brick and flint medieval undercroft. It was probably built in the 14th century under a merchant’s house and is one of the oldest parts of Aylsham.

Thorpe Lodge: A talk on the history and occupants of Thorpe Lodge, a late 18th-century house, once the home of the prominent Harvey family and centre of a large estate.

Catton Place: This Grade II* listed building is a five-bay Georgian house of three storeys, with fine interior built by successful wool merchant Robert Rogers as a country house in c.1758. Rogers was Sheriff of Norwich in 1743 and Mayor in 1758. Sir Samuel Bignold of Norwich Union, whose statue is in Surrey Street, owned the house between 1816-56.

Free Heritage Open Days South Norfolk:

Francis Cupiss: Discover the history of the Francis Cupiss company, from its veterinary beginnings to modern day printing, and see practical demonstrations of traditional letterpress printing using the historic presses. Visitors are given the opportunity to have a go at printing something on the large hand-operated Columbian printing press, dating back to 1830.

History of Advertising at Raveningham: Celebrating the 1970s! A screening of a nostalgic selection from the nation’s TV advertising archives reflecting everyday British life in the 1970s. Organised in partnership with the ‘Saving the Seventies’ project (HLF/Association of Suffolk Museums).

Riddlesworth Hall. This tour will include a visit to the main rooms at Riddlesworth Hall, a Grade II listed building, as well as St Peter’s Church which is not normally open to the public.

While some Heritage Open Day events require pre-booking, over half of the events are open on a drop-in basis, so there will be plenty of opportunities to encounter Norfolk’s heritage on the day.

Tickets for pre-book events can be requested through the Heritage Open Days events brochure for Norwich and Norfolk, which is out now and available across Norfolk, or from www.heritagecity.org/hods, where you can also find more information on other pre-book and drop-in events happening across the county. Keep up to date by visiting the website, or follow @norwichheart#NorwichHODS and #NorfolkHODs on Twitter and Norwich HEART on Facebook.
