St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth is being transformed into a multi-million pound performance space.
Its facelift has been the spur for a community project, with the organisers Seachange inviting submissions from local artists until 7 February 2011.

The exhibition, called Re:generation, will run at Great Yarmouth library from 5 to 11 March 2011.

Siobhan Johnson, who has organised the project, said her memories of attending pantomimes at the town centre theatre as a child were pivotal in choosing a theme.

“The regeneration is such a big theme and I knew that work was due to start on St George’s and it made me realise that I hadn’t thought about the building itself for several years.

“It was only because it was going to be regenerated that it was brought back to my attention what a beautiful building it is.”

The exhibition will feature work by young artists alongside pieces by those who are already established, displayed together with memories from local people.

“We want local artists to submit work which relates to regeneration,” said Siobhan, Re:generation’s lead volunteer. “It can be any kind of work: painting, drawing, textiles or sculpture.”

It’s hoped the exhibition will chronicle the town’s modern-day existence and provoke debate among the town’s young people.

“We’re looking to put together a collection of people’s memories about the town and the changes the town has undergone over the years, to educate the younger generations on what has happened,” said Siobhan.

Re:generation is being held during the week of Seachange’s Mardi Gras festival on Tuesday, 8 March 2011, on the town’s King Street.

Artists must be 16 years and over to enter the exhibition and live in Norfolk and Waveney. Up to three pieces of art work can be submitted on a CD to be viewed by a panel of art professionals.

Download an application form from the Seachange website and submit your entry by 7 February 2011.
