Lemon Tree (PG)

Director: Eran Riklis. Israel/Germany/France 2008. 106 minutes. Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.
Starring:
Hiam Abbass, Rona Lipaz-Michael, Ali Suliman, Doron Tavory.

A Palestinian widow finds her beloved lemon grove threatened when an Israeli government minister moves in next door. Based on a true story, LEMON TREE turns a simple snapshot of a minor political situation into a touching and memorable analogy for a country divided. Expertly handled by director Riklis, this is a pertinent and beautifully played drama in which the personal meets the political. In the central role, Hiam Abbass, recently seen in THE VISITOR, shines.

This a film which deserves to be rated amongst the best of the past year. Aside from the wonderful Hiam Abbass, who won an Israeli Oscar for her performance, the film has a great deal to offer. A good story, credible characters, sly humour and a powerful sense of place. You can almost smell the lemons during the opening credits, and feel the heat.

Do hope you’ll be able to join us at the Fisher Theatre next Monday.
