Lowestoft Firefighters Raise Funds for Mens Cancer Charity
Firefighter Ben Horne presents the cheque for £3000 to It’s On The Ball Chairman Vince Wolverson (L to R: Mark Frances, Vince Wolverson, Lucy Alexander, Simon Reeves, Anne Wolverson, Ben Horne, Chris Morling).

Firefighters from Lowestoft South Fire Stations Blue Watch recently presented Norwich based charity It’s On The Ball with a cheque for £3000.00. Members of Blue Watch decided to raise funds for the charity after one of their crew, Ben Horne, was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer in March 2014. Blue Watch organised a ‘Test-A-Ball Festival’ with live music, Disco, Raffle and Auction last August. The event raised £4000.00 with £1000.00 going to the Fire Fighters Charity.

Watch Commander Simon Reeves said, ‘Following Ben’s diagnosis the watch members wanted to raise some money for the It’s On The Ball charity in recognition of the support they give to Testicular Cancer patients during their treatment’. Simon wished to thank all the local Lowestoft businesses that contributed to the success of the fund raising event, all the Lowestoft South fire crews, and in particular all the members of Blue Watch including Rachael Law, Pete Brown and Andrew Jackson who were unable to attend the cheque presentation.

Vince Wolverson, Chairman of It’s On The Ball said, ‘Blue Watch have raised a fantastic amount on our behalf which will help us to provide support to patients who are diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. The Test-A-Ball Festival will also have helped to raised awareness of Testicular Cancer amongst the members of the Suffolk emergency services. It gives me particular pleasure to receive the cheque from Ben, who after successful surgery and chemotherapy, is now fully fit and back on active duty with the fire service’.

Notes

It’s On The Ball is a Norwich based charity, which aims to raise awareness of Testicular Cancer, and provide support to those affected and their families. Testicular cancer, although relatively rare, is the most common form of cancer in young men. If detected early enough, treatment is successful in over 98% of cases. The key message is for men to check themselves regularly for anomalies, and to seek medical advice if they have any concerns.
