CHANCE TO DIG DEEP

1. ‘Dig Deep’ and Rush Hockey

James Legg and Lucie Hadley (Magpie members away at university) are holding an event at Weybread on Sunday 9 June combining Rush Hockey (7-a-side) with raising money for ‘Dig Deep’, a charity committed to helping communities in Africa improve their access to clean water, sanitation and renewable energy. Play will begin at 10.00am and James and Lucie invite you to come along for a fun few hours with hockey, refreshments, raffle etc.

Bring your own team (ladies, men, boys, girls, mixed) or come on your own to join up with others just like yourself. Please also bring a white and coloured shirt. The entry fee will be £3 per head with all the money raised going to the charity.

If you would like to take part please contact James on 07735 097462 or on [email protected]. He will be very pleased to hear from you.

2. Congratulations to:

a) Laura Betts (former captain of the Ladies’ 2nds) and Thomas Ward on the birth of Otto on 28 March.

b) Toby Price who over the first weekend of May made his debut for England U16s in the three-match series against Ulster. England won 5-2, 3-0 and 2-1 and Toby played in the second and third matches scoring in the second from a penalty corner.

c) The following members who have been selected to represent the various East Masters’ teams – Phil Cobbald & Jon Wells (O50s), Jon Aldridge & Murray Graham (O55s) andPeter Dolton & Jim Stather (O60s). Let’s hope these selections act as an incentive to Roger Kent and Kevin Ridley as the years go by!

d) James Smith, Kirstin Cumming and Daphne Beckett and their ‘teams’ on the organisation of another highly successful May Day Hockey Festival at Weybread and a big ‘thank you’ to the 40 teams which took part over the weekend.

3. The Mixed team brings down the curtain on home competitive hockey for the season (which began way back on 15 September) when they entertain Deeside Ramblers in the quarter-finals of the EHB Cup this coming Sunday (1.30). Your support of our team led by Leigh Sitch (who is fit to play despite his ‘kamikaze’ car park accident!) and Katrina Warnes would be most welcome. The winners go forward to the semis and final to be held at Beeston HC over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 8/9 June.

4. Dates for your diary please:

a) Youth Presentation Evening – Friday 17 May (6.00 – 9.00pm), b) AGM – Thursday 20 June (7.30pm), c) Strawberry Luncheon – Sunday 30 June.

5. Please see the Home Page of the club’s website for details of:

a) Our golf tuition link with Bungay Golf Club, b) the opening of the new hockey pitch at Taverham (Bank Holiday Monday 27 May) and c) Roy and Rosie Goodwin’s Charity Music Day ‘sylehambury IV’ in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance (Saturday 22 June). The air ambulance once took Leigh Sitch to hospital but was not called following the car park fiasco!
