Bridesmaids (15)

Wednesday 16 November 8pm Tickets £4 / Students £2

Directed by Paul Feig, 2011

USA, 125 minutes

With Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph,

Chris O’Dowd

Bridesmaids is a terrifically funny, smart and tender ensemble comedy, pulling off the remarkable trick of being brutal and gentle (and occasionally crude) at the same time. The full horror of being a bridesmaid is shown, but Feig persuades us that there is something genuinely loving and sisterly to be found at the end of this incredible ordeal. Wiig plays a maid of honour whose life unravels as she organises her best friend’s wedding with a group of colourful bridesmaids, before she emerges into something like triumph. Chris O’Dowd is an excellent foil as her long-suffering suitor.

Diss’ own Electric Youth Revolt are Steven Bailey (bass), Neil Dennis (vocals & guitar) and Rob Goodwin (drums). Their canon of upbeat anthems displays a wide range of influences from 60s Mod records, aggressive punk power, the wave of 90s Britpop and modern angular garage bands. Since their victory in April’s DISScovery competition they have taken their original twist of indie garage rock all over the region, wowing festival audiences and are undertaking a full UK tour.

Claudia Aurora

Saturday 19 November. 8pm. Tickets £10 / Concessions £9

The haunting melodies of fado – traditional Portuguese folk-blues – have always held listeners spellbound; Porto-born singer/songwriter Claudia Aurora is its powerful new voice. Fado is renowned for its heady mix of loss, longing, love and nostalgia, and Aurora – who was a hit at this year’s Norwich Festival – sings it like no one else. ‘Boy, she has a voice, as elementally strong as the tides of which she sings, and as imbued with ability to induce calm or awe.’ Venue magazine

Senna (PG)

Wednesday 23 November .8pm. Tickets £4 / Students £2

Directed by Asif Kapadia UK, 106 minutes

You don’t need to know or care about motor racing to enjoy Kapadia’s film about legendary Brazilian F1 champion Ayrton Senna. The film’s masterstroke is its exclusive use of archive footage, with no talking heads or modern-day interruptions. With so much recorded footage, Senna’s story is a live drama rather than a posthumous documentary. The immediacy of the approach is exhilarating and, as we approach the inevitably tragic ending, undeniably emotional.

squeeze person.” Eddie Izzard

Gordon Southern (compère)

His upbeat and energetic delivery combined with his fantastically funny observational comedy and quick witted improvisation has secured his place as an audience favourite. ‘Razor sharp wit and cavernous imagination.’ Evening Standard www.redcardcomedyclub.com
