New allotments at Swan Lane – Getting organised
Halesworth in Transition

On Saturday 26th March 2011 BBC Radio Suffolk’s will be planting the first site at Swan Lane, off Lansbury Road. The Town Council has been working towards this for some years and got planning permission in August ’09.

Halesworth has an ever-growing list of people interested in all the good things that can come out of working on allotments. Part of the land will be run as a “community allotment” where people can practice gardening skills and share produce.

Gift from RHS and Woodland Trust : 400 small trees
The wonderful gift of 400 native tree saplings has been made to HinT (Halesworth in Transition) for use on the new allotments. Huge thanks for these saplings to RHS Britain in Bloom and the Woodland Trust. They have teamed up to give away 200,000 tree saplings. In the last weekend of March there will be lots of tree planting events all around the country to launch the RHS campaign. RHS is also working with the United Nation’s 2011 International Year of the Forest which promotes the benefits trees bring to wildlife and communities.

And on Monday 28th March at 7pm in the Day Centre, London Road there will be a meeting of everyone who has, or who wants, an allotment in Halesworth and anyone else interested in gardening for vegetables, fruit and for leisure.

The guest speaker will be Karen Kenny, National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardens. There is already a thriving Halesworth Gardening Society and at this meeting we hope to set up a group who will support the running of all the allotments in the town, old and new. Everyone on the waiting list has had an invitation, and experienced gardeners and current allotment-holders are also very welcome.
