NORFOLK-CONTEMPORARY-CRAFT-SOCIETY-2014

NORFOLK CONTEMPORARY CRAFT SOCIETY

Monday 19th May until Sunday 1st June 2014

Opening times are 10am – 5pm each day, except for Sunday, when they are 12noon – 5pm

For the first time members of the Norfolk Contemporary Crafts Society will be exhibiting at the Wymondham Arts Centre.  As well as a beautifully crafted exhibition there will be demonstrations from members Marian Williams, Nicola Gibson and Sheila Gates.

Marian Williams fresh from Norwich Fashion week, will be leading a natural dying and Ecoprint workshop. Marian produces exquisite couture garments, dyed with natural dyes, which she produces herself, often using natural materials, which she finds in her local environment. If you want locally produced fashion you can’t get more local than this. For the workshop Marian invites you to bring your own Broom, Dandelion, Marigold, Wallflowers or Coreopsis flowers and Clematis, Copper Beech, Dandelion, Eucalyptus, Ginkgo or Hawthorn leaves to imprint onto silk. Or experiment with a selection of leaves and flowers that she will bring to the workshop.

Textiles designer maker Nicola Gibson’s demonstration of Cyanotypes will give visitors the opportunity to try the original method of producing Blueprinting but using fabric as a medium. This is a chemical process which relies on UV rays to expose light sensitive chemicals producing a vibrant cyan blue negative of the subject. The image will dye the fabric to create a permanent fabric photogram to keep and take away.

Sheila Gates graphic designer turned glass artist; will be demonstrating the use of Glassline pens to create hand lettering, illustration or simple random shapes on glass for subsequent fusing in a glass kiln. Used alongside other coloured glass products Glassline pens offer enormous scope to add detail and create unusual effects when fused in the glass kiln.

The NCCS, as a selected member group, always display a very high standard of work; the members are highly skilled and innovative. This exhibition will showcase these skills and with the demonstrations give some insight into how some of the members produce their unique artefacts.

Nicola Gibson:
FRIDAY 23rd May 10am – 12.30pm

Demonstration of cyanotypes will give visitors the opportunity to try the original method of producing Blueprinting but using fabric as a medium.

This is a chemical process which relies on UV rays (ideally provided by the sun, but artificial UV is equally effective) to expose light sensitive chemicals producing a vibrant cyan blue negative of the subject.

The image will dye the fabric to create a permanent fabric photogram to keep and take away.

Sheila Gates:
SATURDAY 24th May 10am – 12noon and 1pm – 4pm

Kiln Fused Glass: Sheila will be demonstrating the use of Glassline pens to create hand lettering, illustration or simple random shapes on glass for subsequent fusing in a glass kiln.

Glassline pens are one of the many and varied modern materials that can be used on glass or between two sheets of glass to great effect.

Used alongside other coloured glass products such as sheet glass, confetti, frit, stringers etc, Glassline pens offer enormous scope to add detail and create unusual effects when fused in the glass kiln.
