Norwich BID goes Banksy

Norwich BID goes Banksy

Whether you are a Michelangelo or a Banksy, Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) is looking to put art centre stage in the city.  The first in a series of murals for the city centre were unveiled by Norwich BID at a special launch event during April 2016.

The mural located on the side of Pymm & Co on Ber Street was created by Norwich University of the Arts graduate Poppy Cole and installed by Gorleston based 3D Creations.  Depicting the city centre the first mural illustrates the quality of design that Norwich BID are looking for from other artists and designers.

As part of this exciting launch Norwich BID will announce a call for submission of designs to be used in the first wave of city centre murals.  Artists, illustrators and designers are encouraged to submit potential designs that can be used in the city centre.

The project selectors are looking for creative and original submissions that can be used on the side of buildings, unused walls and other vacant spaces within the city centre.

The first wave of the project will see a number of locations in Norwich turned into canvases for creative and one-off pieces of art.  These additional city centre murals could be visible as early as July.

Martin Blackwell, Business and Operations Manager said, “This is a fantastic project for the city and we want the murals to be executed in a distinctive way, each one unique to Norwich and interpreting its surroundings.  As the project grows it will add to the cultural tourism in the city and the region, delivering a new dimension to the experience of the city centre, and positively building the perception of Norwich as a ‘City of Stories’.  We also want other businesses in the city centre to come forward with blank walls that might make great canvases”.

Steve Pymm, owner, Pymm & Co said, “We are honored to be chosen as the first business in Norwich to be involved in this creative project.  We love the artwork created by Poppy and 3D Creative have done a superb job of the install.  We look forward to seeing more great murals around the city as the project develops”.

Taking inspiration from the USA where architecture is turned into a canvas for artists, the murals project links with the City of Stories campaign, which aims to attract more visitors to the city and encourage locals and residents to enjoy what’s on their doorstep.
