Two 1998 teenagers (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) are literally sucked in to the black and white world of a 1950s TV soap. An engaging and moving fantasy that mocks the repressions of the past. Joan Allen and William H Macy are splendid as the parents who resist, in vain, the youngsters’ attempts to introduce colour and passion to their lives. Special effects are used with great wit. A gloriously watchable and moving satire, with music by Randy Newman.
