Please don’t leave your unwanted Chickens on the Roundabout!

Gordon Knowles, the Chicken Man, rang me very distressed early one Sunday morning a few weeks ago. He had gone down to feed the chickens early that morning but found one of them with a badly injured leg. I went down to discover it was one of the cockerels that had lived at the roundabout for quite some time and was very streetwise.

It was therefore a mystery as to how he had become so badly injured. His leg was broken in two places but there were no other signs of injury, so it was unlikely that he had been hit by a car!!

He is a large cockerel, so it is taking some while for the break to heal. Jo, at Little Hen Rescue has kindly taken over his care and he is making very good progress. He is in apparently very good voice amongst all the battery hens!

We are extremely concerned that people are still dropping chickens off at the roundabout! Over a hundred have been taken in the past year! We don’t know what their fate has been and many others have been found injured.
Despite an investigation by the RSPCA it has still continued, this has been very upsetting for Gordon, who is now 78 yrs old and who has walked 4 miles each day over the past 22 years to feed them and care for them.
He has received some donations for food but most of it he has been paid for himself out of his pension. He has loved doing it but has found this past year very sad and distressing. His main concern is for the safety of the chickens and feels it is no longer safe for them to be there, especially at night.

Little Hen Rescue can be contacted about re-homing chickens and cockerels which is now a much more humane option!!
