The Seafarers’ Centre caters for seafarers visiting the UK’s largest container port and provides rest, recreation, entertainment and spiritual guidance. Deakinlock were asked to design a relaxing, year-round garden space for visiting seafarers to enjoy.
Jason explains: “We had a limited budget to work with and a challenging site, which was largely tarmac and very close to the railway line. It was a privilege to show Her Royal Highness how we have transformed the area and she seemed genuinely impressed with the end result.”
Now, a timber pergola with a clear Perspex roof provides a bright shelter, whilst a raised paved area with seating gives welcome sanctuary from the worst of the weather. Raised beds, timber cladding on the security fencing and bonded shingle have transformed the tarmac and screened the railway line.
Deakinlock was formed in 2008 by Chris Deakin and Jason Lock following long careers at Notcutts Landscapes. Now based at Earsham hall, near Bungay, Deakinlock specialises in creating inspirational landscapes and garden designs throughout the UK and overseas.
Jason and Chris are both registered members of the Society of Garden Designers, registered designers with British Association of Landscape Industries and already have a raft of awards under their belts; they are currently working with John Woods Nurseries on this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, following a Gold award in 2010 for their ‘Upwardly Mobile Garden’.
