One of Suffolk’s best loved landscapes today reaches a landmark age as RSPB Minsmere nature reserve celebrates its 65th birthday.

It was on this day, in 1947, that the RSPB signed a conditional agreement with the Ogilvie Estate to manage 1500 acres of marshland and woodland close to Westleton village.

Under the RSPB’s careful stewardship, Minsmere has expanded to 2500 acres (1000 hectares), developed into the UK’s most important nature reserve, and become one of the best places for people to discover nature for themselves.

RSPB spokesman, Ian Barthorpe, said: “The last 65 years have seen the return of avocets as nesting birds in the UK, and the recovery from near extinction of marsh harriers, bearded tits and bitterns, thanks to the pioneering work of Minsmere’s wardens. Other more recent conservation successes include the return of otters to the Suffolk coast, and the re-colonisation of stone-curlews at Minsmere.

“In the 1950s Minsmere wardens built the first birdwatching hides, and Minsmere remains the RSPB’s flagship reserve for visitors. The latest hide was opened in November overlooking Island Mere, and has been widely acclaimed for its amazing views of secretive reedbed wildlife.

“The superb visitor centre was re-opened last month following a major expansion as part of the Minsmere Discover Nature Project. The brand new Discover Centre, Wild Zone and Wild Wood Adventure, which will offer an exciting range of activities for schools and families, are due to open in the next few weeks.”

To celebrate Minsmere’s landmark birthday, the RSPB is organising a Spring Celebration this weekend. Wardens and volunteers will be at key locations around the nature trails and hides to help visitors to see some of Minsmere’s special wildlife. The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm. Normal reserve entry charges apply.

To help make the weekend even more special, the Waveney Bird Club will be present to demonstrate bird ringing, and there will be a demonstration of binoculars and telescopes with Viking Optical of Halesworth.

Early risers might like to book a place on a dawn chorus guided walk to hear nightingales, bitterns and more. These walks start at 4 am each day, returning for breakfast in the Minsmere cafe. Advance booking is essential by calling 01728 648281.
