St-Georges-Church-Shimpling

The programme of events to be held at St George’s Church, Shimpling, during 2014 has been announced.  It is one of 344 churches in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

28th July, 1914, saw the outbreak of the First World War, now, in 2014 – on Sunday 27th July, at 3:00pm – St George’s Church is to host a Commemoration of the twelve men of Shimpling who died in the Service of their Country. Also being remembered will be those who served and survived – for whom life would never be the same again.  Mrs Rosemary Steer, who has compiled a brief biography of each of the ‘Shimpling Twelve’, will be sharing the results of her research at the event.  It is expected that members of the Dickleburgh branch of the Royal British Legion will also be present.

The Patronal Festival of the Church will be celebrated with a Service of Holy Communion on St George’s Day, Wednesday 23rd April, at 10:30am, followed by wine and nibbles.

In June – on Wednesday the 18th at 7:30pm – raconteur Roy Tricker is returning to St George’s, this time with his talk on ‘Some Eccentric East Anglian Clergyman’.

The annual Carols by Candlelight Service is scheduled for Thursday 18th December at 7:00pm.

The Church will again be participating in the national Heritage Open Days on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September.  Saturday 13th is also the date of the annual Norfolk Churches Trust sponsored cycle ride.

St George’s Church is now open every day – however clubs, societies and individuals who would like an informal guided afternoon or evening tour to hear something of the history of the building and people associated with it, should contact Maurice Philpot on 07817 108239 or [email protected].  There is no charge, but donations towards the work of the Churches Conservation Trust are welcome.
