Song of the Golden Hare: exhibition opens at World Land Trust (WLT) gallery Halesworth

Wild flowers and grasses, butterflies and birds, hares and hounds all feature in the picture book, Song of the Golden Hare by Jackie Morris. Delicately drawn and painted, the original illustrations for the book go on show for the first time at World Land Trust (WLT) gallery in Halesworth, Suffolk, on 3 May 2014.

Jackie draws inspiration from the natural world, and her works are filled with intimate details. Beautiful and enchanting, both her story and illustrations capture the magic and mystery of the wild world and the creatures that inhabit it.

Song of the Golden Hare tells of two siblings, a brother and sister, who leave their grandfather’s house early one morning to follow the running hares. After a long journey the children come at last to an ancient wood of twisted oak by the sea, where they witness a great gathering of hares. Of all the hares, two are golden. Both are queens, one young and one old.

The children stay to watch over the young queen of the hares and her golden leveret. And when it is time for the old queen to make her final journey, the children accompany her to the shore, protecting her from the sinister huntsman who lurks on the edge of the story with his two hounds, one silver, one black.

During the exhibition Jackie will be in residence at WLT gallery on 3/4 May and 11/12 June 2014. She will be signing copies of Song of the Golden Hare at the exhibition opening and during the residencies. Signed copies will also be on sale in the gallery.

The exhibition opens on 3 May and runs until 13 June 2014. Jackie will be in Halesworth Library on Sunday 4 May at the lunchtime drop-in craft session for children (12-2.30pm). On Wednesday 11 June she will be at the Time Out group in the morning (10.30am-12pm) and at an after school session in the afternoon (4-5pm). WLT gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am–4pm and closed on the May Bank Holidays, 5 and 26 May. WLT gallery will be open on Saturday/Sunday 3/4 May, 10am–4pm.

Jackie Morris wanted to be an artist from at least the age of six, after watching her father making a bird appear on a piece of paper using only a pencil. Jackie moved to Wales just before starting work on illustrations for her first children’s book, Jo’s Storm by Caroline Pitcher, which was published in 1994. Nowadays she concentrates on illustrating books she has written herself such as The Ice Bear (2010) and The Snow Leopard (2007). Song of the Golden Hare was published in 2013.
