Newmarket-Racecourses

We’re all aware of Newmarket Racecourses but few appreciate the town’s wider credentials as a short break destination. 5000 thoroughbred horses call it home (don’t be surprised to see hundreds stopping traffic on the way to morning exercise on the gallops) plus its charming equestrian heritage, impressive accommodation options and proximity to London make it a very unique getaway.

Stay at the former county home of Lord Byron’s sister at Paddocks House. One of the rooms has a private cinema and views over the stunning landscaped garden. This cosy home-from-home is also renowned for its afternoon tea with sumptuous teas and cakes enjoyed in The Reading Room. Bed and breakfast in a double room starts from £174.

For lovers of sport, Newmarket Racecourses is un-missable being home to 38 racedays per year and a showcase of the world’s finest horse-races as they compete on the hallowed turf of the Rowley Mile (spring and autumn racing) or the July Course (summer racing). The venue is also popular with those new to the sport, hosting live open-air concerts and family entertainment throughout the year. Plus those celebrating a win can enjoy a pint of award-winning Suffolk beer at the Adnams Cask Bar.

Have a go on a racehorse simulator and try on some silks at the National Horseracing Museum where visitors can learn about British racing from its early royal origins, see objects associated with Frankie Dettori and Red Rum and get a glimpse of life behind-the-scenes at the home of horseracing. The practical gallery is staffed by retired trainers and jockeys for that all important insider knowledge. Adults £6.50 and children £3.50.
