Stay warm during the cold winter weather

During the current cold weather and over the coming winter months NHS Suffolk is encouraging people to stay warm to prevent colds, flu or more serious health problems like pneumonia.

Dr Peter Bradley, NHS Suffolk’s director of public health said: “It’s important to stay warm to protect yourself against the winter cold and by following some simple advice you can keep yourself healthy over the coming months.

“In the home you should keep the rooms you use during the day heated to 21 degrees. Make sure you heat up your bedroom before you go to bed, and it is a good idea to set your heating to come on before you wake up so you won’t be cold first thing in the morning.

“Electric blankets and hot water bottles are ideal for warming up your bed, however don’t use both at the same time as you could be electrocuted. Remember that some electric blankets are designed to be turned off when you get into bed and shouldn’t be used overnight.

“It’s important to get your electric blanket serviced at least every three years – faulty electric blankets cause 5000 house fires every year and over 65s are particularly at risk with six times the national average of fatal injuries.

“Keep cosy in bed by wearing socks, thermal underwear or a nightcap.

“If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom remember to keep a door or window ajar for some ventilation.

“Finally, don’t forget to check on elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours – make sure their heating is working and that their home is kept warm.”
