A pilot project to lend eReaders to library customers is being launched at Thurston Library next Saturday 10 May 2014.

The pilot may be one of the first of its kind in England and aims to encourage the use of library eBooks by lending a small number of eReader devices so people can access them.

The scheme is being launched at a ‘Get Connected’ event next Saturday at Thurston Library. The event runs from 10am until 2pm and will provide advice and information about a range of online library services including eBooks, the library’s free Wi-Fi, eAudio books and the Freegal free music service.

The Friends of Thurston Library have been working closely with Suffolk Libraries and the local community to promote eBooks and develop the services which the library has to offer.

The pilot scheme will involve four NOOK eReader devices being made available to borrow like any other library loan. Staff will provide advice on loading the eReaders with a selection of up to six eBooks from the range of nearly 7,000 now available from Suffolk Libraries.

There will also be a chance to buy a raffle ticket with a chance to win an ‘Apple iPad Air’ and buy tickets to a fundraising Italian meal taking place at the New Green Centre on Saturday 31 May. The meal is to raise funds for the library and St Peter’s Church.

The Friends of Thurston Library have been working to support their local library for the last few years. If you are interested in joining the group or finding out more, the next meeting is next Wednesday (7 May at 7pm at the library).

The Friends of Thurston Library have also organised a talk by Martyn Taylor on Bury St Edmunds at the library on 22 May. Martyn Taylor will be giving a talk on some of the curious, strange, weird and interesting bits and pieces of the history of the town. Martyn has recently written a book called ‘Bury St Edmunds Through The Times’, and will be selling this for a discounted price on the evening. Tickets for the talk cost £2.

Imogen Sheeran to showcase jewellery in Bungay Library

Imogen Sheeran, mother of singer songwriter Ed Sheeran, will be hosting an evening talk about her handmade jewellery at Bungay Library next Wednesday 14 May 2014 at 7.30pm.

The unique jewellery has been worn by the Duchess of Cambridge and BBC Radio 1’s Jameela Jamil. Imogen will give a talk about the sourcing of her beads and the making of the jewellery, followed by the opportunity to ask questions, look at the jewellery and make a purchase.

Items made by Ed Sheeran will also be available on the night and samples can be seen at www.edsheeranjewellery.com

This event is free, but places are limited so please call the library on 01986 892748 to book a place or for more information. A percentage of the jewellery sales on the night will be donated to the Bungay Community Library group to support the library.

Imogen Sheeran lives locally and is also a keen supporter of Halesworth Library with her jewellery regularly on sale there.
