THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (15)
Origin: Italy/Algeria (Subtitled)
Year: 1966
Running Time: 121 mins

Director: Gillo Pontecorvo
Cast: Jean Martin, Brahim Hadjadj

When the Pentagon showed this film in 2003, they publicised it as ‘How to win the battle against terrorism and lose the war of ideas’. It is a study of how both the Algerian nationalists and the French army became dehumanised by war. For Algeria read Iraq.

Within the tradition of Italian neo-realism – location filming and casting non-professional actors – Pontecorvo blurs the edges of fiction and documentary, creating a masterpiece with Oscar nominations in two successive years.
