In his quest to buy oil-rich land, Daniel Plainview (Day- Lewis) manipulates local landowners, exploits his adopted son and connives with the local pastor – who has his own agenda for the potential rewards. As the oil flows, conflict arises and Plainview’s real self emerges as he sinks into a malevolent madness. Day – Lewis’s performance is framed by a film whose ambitions are even bigger than his acting. Oscars all round.
