A testimony to human spirit as ‘The Trench’ comes to life to tell its tale in a remarkable piece of commemorative theatre.

Creative Arts East, the Norfolk-based arts and community development charity, are contributing to the calendar of national commemorative events this month with an astounding site-specified theatre experience on 21st and 22nd November, in the historic setting of a hangar at Old Buckenham Airfield.

Internationally renowned theatre company Les Enfants Terribles are coming to the county to transform an aircraft hangar, setting the scene for their remarkable performance, ‘The Trench’, for three performances over two days.

‘The Trench’ combines theatre, live music and puppetry for a performance inspired by the true-life story of Burt, a miner who became entombed in a tunnel during WW1, and follows his epic journey as he battles for salvation and sanity. As the horror threatens to engulf him, the boundaries between reality and fantasy begin to blur and Burt discovers a strange world beneath the mud and death, leaving him to question what’s real, what’s not and whether it even matters?

The performance has been designed to appeal to a broad spectrum, from regular theatre-goers to those with a special interest in the history of the time and offers an accessible way to gain an insight, through a very human story, into the reality of the experience of a young soldier.

Amongst a long list of 5-star ratings, ‘THE STAGE’ rated The Trench as its ‘Must See Show’, saying:

“A total theatre experience of engrossing intensity, The Trench employs acting, mime, music, puppetry, film and even flying to enrich history with the quality of myth and reinvest an old story with the power it has lost through over-familiarity”.

The experience has been funded by a ‘Pride in Breckland’ grant from Breckland Council and is expected to draw large crowds to see this unique piece of theatre, so early booking is advised.

You can see ‘The Trench’ at Old Buckenham Airfield on Friday 21st at 8pm and Saturday 22nd November at 3pm and 8pm.

The show is suitable for adults and children 12 years +.
