A Night of Folk Music with Terence Blacker

Sunday 1 September, 7.30pm

Join the writer and musician Terence Blacker as he introduces an evening of Folk music, including Cajun, Old-time, Appalachian, English acapella, Contemporary and Jazzy/Funk, featuring the Milkmaid Folk Club’s bands and musicians.

During the evening why not enjoy a pint of one of our special ales: Milkmaid Mild or Theatre Royal Bitter in the Greene Room (before, during or after the show).

Bands and musicians appearing include Kelly and Woolley, Cudby Calder, The Larks, Sound Tradition, Fern Teather, Valerie Choiseul and ‘B sometimes of the banjo’.

’Money raised from this fundraising event will help to support the Theatre Royal’s community and education programme (Registered Charity 242977) and The Milkmaid Folk Arts Centre C.I.C.

The Globe Theatre on tour presents The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Joe Murphy.

A small troupe of female travelling players breathes new life into Shakespeare’s outrageous comedy. Taming of The Shrew stars one of Theatre’s great screwball double-acts: a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up until the play’s controversial conclusion.

The Globe last visited the Theatre Royal with As You Like It and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

 

Michael Law’s Piccadilly Dance Orchestra

Saturday 7 September, 7.30pm

Stylish, sophisticated, smooth… Michael Law’s Piccadilly Dance Orchestra, recently featured on BBC 4’s hit programme Len Goodman’s Dancing Feet, recreate the glamour of the golden age of popular music, the 1920’s to 40’s, along with a hearty helping of foot-tapping jazz and ‘hot’ dance music… rediscover the lost, magical world of Broadway and Hollywood music from between the wars.

Programme includes: Night and Day, Anything Goes, I Get A Kick Out of You, Say It With Music, My Heart Belongs To Daddy, A Room With A View and Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

Dick’s dad has died. His older brother Julian has come over from the US for the funeral. Dick has put his life on hold to care for his father in his last years. Julian left to pursue a glittering career. They never did get on…

A dark comedy in one act, with original music by Pat Whymark (composer for Dick Turpin’s Last Ride) and featuring Julian Harries and Dick Mainwaring.

A world premiere of an aerial-dance theatre work exploring the largest mass-poisoning in history.

2013. Asha’s hands shake as her sister Arundhati folds her wedding sari around her. 1973. Anjali hangs from silk, her life is pouring out of her. A well is drilled. Clean water. 40 years later, and her daughter now hangs in the balance.

A rich soundscape of Bengali music and interwoven recorded text forms an atmospheric backdrop for Shreya Kumar’s stunning choreographic fusion of classical Indian dance with contemporary aerial circus.
