Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is proud to bring you back its Summer School after a year’s hiatus.

Kes is a charming and moving story which is sure to be a highlight of the Summer season.

‘Kes is essentially about a community that fails its young. At its heart Billy an apparently backward kid, neglected by his tarty mother, beaten up by his older brother and bullied on all sides. THE 39 STEPS

Suffolk Summer Theatres are pleased to present their fun-filled production of this hugely successful play.

Recently returned from the colonies, Richard Hannay is terribly bored. In need of something entirely pointless to do, he goes to the theatre! From this innocuous beginning, Hannay is plunged into adventure involving the stupendous Mr Memory, an exotic female spy, the sinister Professor Jordan and an array of heavies. The thrilling film by Alfred Hitchcock from the story by John Buchan is made larger-than-life on stage courtesy of a cast of thousands… and four actors!

The rippingest of ripping yarns!

This production will be raising money for the Macmillan unit at West Suffolk Hospital, a great cause close to everybody’s heart.

LADY ANNA: ALL AT SEA

A girl who is a lady should never marry a man who is not a gentleman…

It’s 1871, and celebrated novelist Anthony Trollope is Australia-bound aboard the steamship Great Britain. Accompanied by his wife Rose and her maid Isabella, Trollope passes the time by writing his latest tale, Lady Anna. The story, full of intrigue, rebellion and social politics, proves divisive among his fellow passengers – and it’s not long before fact and fiction overlap in a dramatic and witty fashion.  Is Trollope himself a surprising radical pitted against the status quo – or are his characters to blame for the controversy?

This abundantly British business involves a disputed title, fraud, bigamy, a legal case, madness and even attempted murder. An extraordinary set of circumstances finds both Lady Anna and Trollope facing some very difficult questions indeed – but will they follow their hearts and risk being disgraced?

Anxiety builds in Captain Stanhope’s claustrophobic dugout as the threat of an imminent German attack looms over the battalion. As final orders are received, Stanhope must stir his men to overcome the uncertainty of the unknown, make the ultimate sacrifice and prepare to “go over the top” in a truly heart wrenching climax.

Journey’s End is a harrowing insight into the humanity of the First World War based on R. C. Sherriff’s own experiences in the trenches. Utterly compelling, this award-winning classic masterfully brings the courage, valour, humour and inescapable tragedy of warfare to the stage.

Drama/Black Theatre Live In Ass With Watford Palace Theatre & Stratford Circus Arts Centre

HAMLET

For the first time ever in Britain, an all-black cast present Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy.

Mark Norfolk & Jeffrey Kissoon‘s Hamlet pulses with the grief and vengeance of a young man whose world has crumbled around him and now faces among the greatest moral challenges – to kill or not to kill.

Directed by Jeffrey Kissoon, who has most notably worked for the RSC, the National Theatre, Robert Lepage, Peter Hall and in Peter Brook’s seminal production of The Mahabharata. Award-winning playwright Mark Norfolk, the inaugural winner of the Roland Rees Memorial Award, has adapted the play using Shakespeare’s text to create a fast-moving version that gets to the heart of a young man’s dilemma.

This first all-black production of Hamlet in Britain makes a very striking contribution to the Shakespeare 400 celebration.

A new comedy by John Godber.

When tough actor Jack Skipton returns from filming to care for his ageing aunt, he has no idea what he is letting himself in for. But this might be his most taxing role to date, as he begins an incredible odyssey through the N.H.S, from cancelled GP’s appointments, wrongly booked scans, frustrated Consultants, and abusive home Carers, who smoke on the door step!

Jack’s story is hilarious and heartbreaking, as he and his aunt take on the health service in order to get the right diagnosis, and the right care; as he goes from actor to Carer to drugs Consultant, and she refuses to admit that she is even ill!

Told in a bold physical theatre style and with breathtaking grit and honesty, Godber’s take on our health service is both tender and true, as he investigates what we deserve, and what we receive.
