Nature lovers in Suffolk have several opportunities this winter to discover the beauty and spectacle of huge flocks of ducks, geese and swans.
The RSPB is organizing a series of guided walks to mark World Wetlands Day, which celebrates the signing of an international agreement to protect the world’s most important wetlands for wildlife and people.
There is a rare opportunity to visit RSPB Havergate Island on Saturday 26 January 2013, with boats departing Orford Quay at 9 am and 12 noon. Places are strictly limited on each trip and must be booked in advance by phoning the RSPB Minsmere visitor centre on 01728 648281. Costs are £12 for RSPB members, £15 for non members.
If you prefer to stay on dry land, why not join the warden at RSPB North Warren, near Aldeburgh for a winter wildfowl walk on Saturday 26 January or Saturday 23 February 2013. Both walks leave the Thorpe Road car park, near the Scallop sculpture at 9.30 am and cost £5 per person. Please book via the Minsmere visitor centre.
There’s also a winter wildfowl walk at Minsmere on World Wetlands Day, Saturday 2 February 2013, at 10 am. Costs are £5 per person, plus entry fees for non members.
RSPB spokesman, Ian Barthorpe, said: “Nothing can beat a relaxing winter walk surrounded by huge flocks of ducks and geese. Their colours are amazing in winter, and the chorus of whistles, quacks and honks is a joy to the senses. A trip to Havergate is special at any time, North Warren is the best place in Suffolk to watch geese, and Minsmere always has a surprise in store.”
