WWLR Wells at War: Your Railway needs YOU!

The Wells and Walsingham Light Railway (WWLR) invites you to step back in time and experience

‘Wells at War’; celebrating life in the 1940s and reigniting the spirit of the British Home Front. Our first ever 1940s event takes place on the weekend of 15th and 16th August. An impressive line-up has been arranged and visitors can expect to see, hear and smell wartime in North Norfolk!

We’ll be bringing the era back to life with:

Historical reenactments and public participation featuring ARP Wardens, the WRVS and the Home Guard

1940s music

Vintage vehicles

Beer tent

Wartime food (we won’t ration it too much!)

Traditional games and activities for all the family

Visitors on Sunday will be treated to a spectacular flypast by the BBMF’s Spitfire!

Many of the reenactments and displays will be at our Wells-on-Sea station with further activities taking place down the line. Speaking at the launch of the event, WWLR Managing Director, Nick Champion, said: “This line had an important part to play during the Second World War. As well as carrying essential freight deliveries to the local airbases, an armoured train patrolled the railway at night, on the look-out for enemy aircraft.

“A replica armoured train will be defending Wells-on-Sea station and any unexploded bombs found on the railway line will be dealt with by our own brave bomb disposal boys!

“There’ll be something for everyone to discover, learn and enjoy during this evocative weekend.

“Above all, our event will honour those that served and did their bit for the war effort whether in the forces or at home.”

Event Entry Fee:

Adult: £4.50

Children: £2.50

The entry fee will be refunded when train tickets are purchased (Adult Return: £9.00. Child Return: £7.00. Under 4s travel for free.)

We are also a dog friendly railway and four-legged friends travel for free.

The WWLR operates frequent services daily from our station at Wells-next-the-Sea. Plenty of free parking available.

Refreshments and snacks can be purchased from our new Station Cafe.

Sorry, no axis uniforms welcome at this event.

The WWLR is a 10 ¼ inch gauge preserved railway that runs over four miles from Wells-next-the-Sea to Walsingham, deep in the heart of North Norfolk.

Following the drop of Beeching’s axe back in 1964, the line lay dormant for 18 years until it was revived in 1982 by passionate railway enthusiast and WWLR founder, Lt Cdr Roy Francis, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Today, the WWLR runs steam and diesel locomotives during its long operating season with additional special events throughout the year.
