Pimped wheelbarrows raise more than £60K in 10 years

UEA students who dressed 62 wheelbarrows and themselves for the 2016 Pimp My Barrow Challenge earlier this summer raised a whopping £9505.26 for their efforts, bringing the total raised in this initiative during the last 10 years for Norfolk’s cancer charity Big C to more than £60K.

Pictured at the cheque handover to Big C CEO Dr Chris Bushby are UEA Students’ Union representative and Activities and Opportunities Officer Joe Zilch, back right, and George Redhead PhD student, Norwich Business School, front right, part of the runner-up team who dressed as characters from Thomas the Tank Engine, together with three-wheeled Thomas himself and Big C events manager Dan Bell.

Dr Bushby once again thanked all the teams for their imaginative ways of raising funds and for choosing the Big C, Norfolk and Waveney’s cancer charity to be the beneficiary.

Butchers cut a tasty sum for Big C at the Norfolk Show

A cash auction of meat boxes with contents expertly butchered by 10 of the county’s leading butchers from carcass meat supplied by HG Blake Ltd meat wholesaler of Felthorpe, during demonstrations at this year’s Royal Norfolk Show generated £1500 for Big C.

Pictured receiving the cheque on behalf of Big C, Norfolk and Waveney‘s cancer charity, is Dr Chris Bushby with Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA) Chief Executive Greg Smith and Show and Programmes Director Mark Nicholas, flanked by Norfolk Food Champion Charlie Hodson, H G Blakes Ltd Manager Andrew Clarke who supplied the meat and Icarus Hines of award-winning Hines Butchers. Icarus of Cromer organised the butchers who demonstrated their skills during “The Art of Butchery – Meat the Butchers” initiative held in the Food Hall over both days at the show.

As the President’s nominated charity of the Year, Big C was the recipient of monies raised from the public sale of about 30 boxes containing pork, beef and lamb products entertainingly auctioned by Flying Kiwi founder Chris Coubrough and Charlie Hodson at the end of each demonstration.

Dr Chris Bushby said:” It was wonderful for Big C to be chosen as the President’s show charity during our 35th anniversary year. We are immensely grateful to the butchers and RNAA and bidding members of the public for their generosity. Big C has many imaginative fund-raisers and supporters, but I think this is the first time that butchering has generated income for cancer patients and their families in the area.”

Mark Nicholas said:” The RNAA is delighted by the success of the inaugural event and that Big C is to benefit from the publics’ generosity in this way.”

Let #GBBO inspire you to “bake” for a Big C Cuppa party

Norfolk and Waveney’s cancer charity Big C is celebrating the Great British Bake Off  by calling on young people to get into the kitchen to bake a cake, or two, and hold a Cuppa party to help cancer patients and their families.

Creating a delicious, sweet, chocolatey or crunchy cake, tray bake or biscuit is the perfect excuse to spend a day at the end of the school holidays doing something that helps others while having fun with friends. Get your friends together and compete; award a prize for the best cake or biscuit, just make sure you don’t ask Paul to judge!!!

“Everyone knows you can’t have a cuppa without a piece of cake or biscuit,” said Clive Evans, Director of Income Generation and Communications at Big C. ”You might also make a delicious signature juice or special iced tea to sell. Cuppas are a fun way of helping Big C and making a big difference to cancer sufferers and their families in our region. you could even bake the cakes and send them to the office with mum or dad to encourage them to hold a Cuppa at their work place.”

It is easy to arrange. Big C has special free fund-raising packs with helpful advice on holding a Cuppa party, including balloons, stickers, posters and invitations to pop through neighbour’s doors. You might even want to hold your cuppa party on the beach or in the park.

Big C would like to hear your stories and see your pictures from your Cuppa parties, so send them to [email protected] and we’ll share them through our social media or post them tagging Facebook.com/bigccharity and Instagram @bigccharity.
