Disability Sport Survey could pave the way for funding bid
News from Optua, Suffolk Sport and Suffolk County Council

Disabled people in Suffolk are being asked for their views on sport.

Disability charity Optua is working with Suffolk Sport and Suffolk County Council to collect information from as many disabled people as possible in Suffolk about their participation in sport.

Everyone is hoping the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will inspire more people to get into sport but research shows that participation amongst disabled people in sporting activity is still relatively low.

Sport England have launched the new Inclusive Sport Fund aimed at improving opportunities for people to become involved and take part in sport. A survey is being circulated across the county which is aimed at anyone with a physical, learning, sensory or other disability. The feedback from this will hopefully be used to put together a countywide funding bid to the Inclusive Sport Fund which, if successful, could improve disability sport opportunities in Suffolk.
Optua, Suffolk Sport and Suffolk County Council are looking to find out more about the levels of sport people with disabilities are currently doing, what they would like to do and what the barriers are to them taking part.

Philip Williams, Chief Executive of Optua, said: “We want to hear the views of as many people with disabilities as possible and it’s just as important that we hear from people who aren’t taking part in sport as we need to know why. We know there are many reasons including health, access to facilities, the cost and transport which put people but there may be ways to tackle these barriers and provide new opportunities.”

The survey can be completed online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P3W5MNR or via Optua’s pdf  link Click Here.

Paper copies of the surveys or alternative formats can be requested from Optua on 01473 836777.

Optua is hoping to get as many responses as possible by early July but will be accepting completed surveys throughout the month.
