New mums and mums-to-be who are thinking about breastfeeding their babies will be able to get expert information, support and advice when a new baby café opens in Diss.

The café will be run by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C) in partnership with Diss Children’s Centre and the Baby Café charity, which coordinates a network of breastfeeding drop-ins across the country. It will welcome its first parents in the Waveney Room at Corn Hall in St Nicholas Street on Monday, September 9 and will run each week from 1pm to 2.30pm.

At the sessions, mums, mums-to-be and their partners will be able to enjoy a cup of coffee while chatting to NCH&C’s expert health visitors and midwives from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital about the benefits of breastfeeding and techniques. They will also have the chance to discuss any questions or concerns they may have and hear from other parents about their own experiences.

Parents visiting the café will also be able to get general advice about caring for their children and general health and wellbeing support.

Wendy Coulson, a Health Visitor with NCH&C, who has helped set up the café, said: “Our aim is to help mums to feel relaxed while showing people that breastfeeding is completely normal and natural.

“Research shows that breastfeeding is good for both mother and child. As well as protecting babies against a wide range of illnesses, such as gastroenteritis and respiratory infections, it can also reduce the risk of some cancers among mums.

“But it isn’t always easy and lots of new mothers need support. We’re committed to making sure they get the help they need and are really pleased to be able to launch this new café in Diss, which will give breastfeeding mothers the chance to access help and information in a relaxing environment.

“We would encourage all mums in the Diss area who are breastfeeding or thinking about breastfeeding to come along with their partners, share their experiences and hopefully make some new friends too.”

Emma Carrington-Blunt, Family Worker with Diss Children’s Centre and Baby Café facilitator, said: “We are thrilled to launch the newest Baby Café, which will offer community support for breastfeeding women in Diss and enable them to breastfeed for longer.”
