IVF treatment in Suffolk

In response to recent media interest NHS Suffolk would like to clarify the position for women in Suffolk who want IVF treatment and how the service works.

Since April 2009, primary care trusts in the NHS East of England region have been working to a new fertility policy to commission IVF services, which was developed region-wide and is based on national NICE guidance on In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

This means that couples who experience difficulty conceiving, and who meet the criteria stated in the policy, will have the possibility of receiving up to three fresh cycles of IVF treatment. Previously, primary care trusts across the region offered only one or two cycles of NHS funded IVF treatment, under policies that varied depending on the local position.

Dr Andrew Hassan, medical director NHS Suffolk, said: “The east of England regional policy, based on NICE guidance, offers a better chance to childless couples seeking to have children by raising and standardising the number of fertility treatment cycles. This means many childless couples in Suffolk will now have a much better chance of conception.”

The policy is fully outlined on the NHS Suffolk website click here
