National Pandemic Flu Service launched

The National Pandemic Flu Service was launched at 1500 hrs today. It is a treatment service, consisting of a website and a telephone number.

Anyone who thinks they have swine flu should do the following:

  • If you require information call the existing swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513
  • If you require treatment visit the National Pandemic Flu Service online at www.nhs.uk or call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 100

Advice remains to everyone who is not showing any symptoms to go about their business as usual while taking sensible precautions to try to limit the spread of infection, such as:

  • covering their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • using a tissue when possible and disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
  • maintaining good basic hygiene by, for example, washing hands frequently with soap and water, particularly before eating

Dr David Kanka, deputy director of public health at NHS Suffolk said: “We would urge people who require both information and treatment for swine flu to use the appropriate contact numbers. We anticipate that the launch of the National Pandemic Flu Service will now relieve pressure on our GPs.”

Key facts:

Swine flu is spreading fast in the UK. Prepare now by:

  • Learning to recognise the symptoms of swine flu
  • Establishing ‘flu friends’ – friends and relatives who can help if you fall ill
  • Keeping paracetamol-based cold remedies in the house
  • Having a thermometer available so you can check your temperature if needed

Note: If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours please check on them. They may need your help but be reluctant to ask for it. It is important you do what you can.
