Free ‘Stop Smoking’ support extended to more local pharmacies

Another 23 pharmacies in Norfolk are offering free nicotine patches to smokers who want to quit.

And you can find the participating pharmacies on a new interactive map on NHS Norfolk’s website: Just go to www.norfolk.nhs.uk

Most pharmacies in Norfolk offer free advice and support to help people stop smoking. Their advice is confidential. However free coupons for nicotine replacement patches are being distributed to households around the 23 participating pharmacies.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) patches help reduce cravings that people can get when giving up smoking. Smokers can double their chances of giving up successfully by using them, and research shows that two-thirds of smokers want to stop.

Research has also shown that smokers are also 4 times more likely to quit with support from an NHS stop smoking service.

Jennie Pusey, NHS Norfolk’s Stop Smoking Service Commissioning Manager, said: “The pharmacies taking part are in areas where, statistically, we believe smoking may be more prevalent so we have commissioned this coupon drop where we can expect best results.

“There will be some people who tried to give up for New Year and did not quite make it so now could be the time to give it a go with the help of your pharmacist.”

People who want NHS help to stop smoking are also able to ask their GP or call Smokefree Norfolk on 0800 0854 113 or email [email protected]

Fifteen other pharmacies in Norfolk are offering free Quit Kits as part of a national stop smoking initiative. These too can be found on the NHS Norfolk interactive map.

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of ill health and early death but people who choose to quit are in very good company. Last year 2971 smokers, in the NHS Norfolk area, quit between April 2010 and December 2010 from the 5751 people who accessed the service.
