Sign up to Norfolk’s Starlight Walk in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and do something amazing for people living with cancer in Norfolk
The Starlight Walk Norwich was first started in 2006 by a small group of people who wanted an event where all of the money raised would go straight into helping cancer patients in Norfolk and also an event that can be done by all abilities. The Starlight Walk has risen over £380,000 to help fund Macmillan nurses in Norfolk.
This summer will see the return of the Starlight Walk, now it its eighth year with a shortened route of 8 miles due to a high demand from walkers as well as starting at an earlier time of 10:00pm on Friday 21st June 2013. The event is open to men and women aged over 16 years of age.
Jane Rumball, administration manager at the Sportspark and who first came up with the idea of the Starlight Walk, said: “The Starlight Walk is a fantastic event every year; we are a no frills, no fuss event and aim to have fun whilst raising as much money as possible. All the money raised, including entry fees and sponsorship money, goes straight to Macmillan in Norfolk and isn’t spent on freebies.”
“We get fantastic support from our walkers every year and want as many people as possible to get involved to raise even more than last year.”
The walk, organised by the Sportspark and sponsored by Chapelfield shopping centre, starts and finishes on the athletics track at the Sportspark and follows the outer ring road.
Last year, just under 700 people took part in the Evening News-supported walk and raised more than £50,000. All funds raised go towards nursing and cancer care in Norfolk.
Sheridan Smith, marketing manager at Chapelfield, said: “We’re proud to be the main sponsor of Starlight Walk 2013 and delighted to be involved in this exciting event, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
“Participating in the Starlight Walk is a very special experience, do have a go – it’s a great feeling.”
Helen Chapman, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan, added: “We are thrilled that the team at SportsPark led by Jane is still as keen as ever to help support local cancer patients and their friends and family in Norfolk. We here at Macmillan really appreciate and admire the SportsPark team for all of the hours and days they spend organising such a great event. We really want this year’s walk to be the biggest and best yet and the new earlier start time and shorter route should help attract new faces to the walk, so come on ladies and gentlemen and help support local people by putting your best foot forward.”
