The Christmas gift that could save a life

Giving a pair of slippers as a Christmas gift might look like you have not put in any thought, but they could just save a life.

Of the 300,000 people aged over 65 who have a serious fall, around nine percent blame their slippers.

Trips and falls can have a devastating effect on older people.

The facts on the effects of trips and falls on the elderly are staggering:

– 14,000 people a year across the country die as a result of a hip fracture
– 50% of older people who suffer a fall can no longer live independently

This Christmas, people across the county are being urged by NHS Suffolk to check that their slippers, and those of their family and friends, are safe.

Kerry Taylor-Holt, a physiotherapist with the Ipswich Day and Treatment team, part of NHS Suffolk, said: “It might seem obvious to check that your slippers are safe. However, many people have a favourite, comfortable old pair they might be loathe to give up, despite the fact they may be worn and potentially dangerous.

“The consequences of an older person having a fall should not be underestimated. That is why, this Christmas, we are encouraging people to check that their own slippers are in good condition and to check those of older friends and relatives.

“Slippers with worn soles could lead to a slip. Slippers that fit poorly could trip you up. Also check that the soles of your slippers are secure, otherwise they could catch on a rug or carpet.

“The safest slippers are those with good quality non-slip rubber soles.

“Christmas is the ideal opportunity to buy a new pair as a gift to yourself or loved one, although remember to make sure they are the right size and well fitting.”
