A shop in Sprowston which has offered support, information and advice to almost 1,000 victims of domestic abuse in Norwich is celebrating being open for two years.

Dawn’s New Horizon is a non-profit making domestic violence support organisation which was set up by Lorraine Saunders in 2006, after being a victim of domestic violence herself.

In 2012 the organisation expanded its work to set up a community shop at 41, Cannerby Lane, Sprowston, which raises money for the organisation to run and at the same time offers a safe haven for many victims to approach and ask for support.

Sprowston Safer Neighbourhood Team now offer their support by popping into the shop every second Friday so that they are available to give first hand advice and support to victims.

Dawn’s New Horizon also offers advice over the telephone and by email and has a website full of information and support for victims and their friends and family: www.dawnsnewhorizon.co.uk

Dawns New Horizon offer support to victims who have experienced domestic or sexual abuse. Services include:

• Free counselling service in English and Spanish
• Accompanying victims to hospitals, police, the doctors, and solicitors
• Safety planning
• Help with rehabilitation
• Completing forms
• Sign posting to other agencies
• Providing a listening ear

Lorraine Saunders said: “Celebrating two years since setting up our shop to help victims of domestic abuse is a significant milestone, the support we offer enables, amongst other things, victims to take back control of their lives.

When we look at the number of people that we have been able to support and advise, both men and women, during that time it brings home the need for such support services in Norfolk.

More work needs to be done to get the message across that domestic violence or abuse is not acceptable and that support is available for victims. I am really glad that we are now working in partnership with Norfolk Constabulary to make a real difference.”

If you would like confidential advice or support with a domestic violence or abuse issue please contact Dawn’s New Horizon on 0844 884 3140.

To raise funds for their work with victims of domestic violence Dawn’s New Horizon will be holding a car boot sale on Sunday 25 May 2014 at 1pm at the Gas Social Club, Rowntree Way, Norwich.
