Suffolk at Play

We are pleased to announce that our Suffolk at Play Exhibition Cube will be on display at Moyse’s Hall Museum, in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, from Saturday 15th November.

The cube features work created by Howard Middle School students and members of the local Over 60’s Club as part of an our intergeneration reminiscence project. Scrapboks, cards, memory boxes and animations, all based on the theme of childhood play, will be available to view and explore as part of this interactive display.

Suffolk at Play

The Suffolk at Play sessions have also been happening at Felixstowe Academy and have we’ve done creative writing with Dean Parkin, we’ve talked about good listening and how to ask open questions, we’ve played with old toys and discussed several new ones, we’ve drawn up a code of behaviour (basically, don’t fidget and hand the cake round first) and written about trampolines, penny arcades and strawberry fields and have started the animations. To see more about what we are doing at Felixstowe, visit our Suffolk at Play blog site.

Forget-me-not Visitors

Although the pilot project is in the evaluation stage, we will be appearing on Ipswich Hospital Radio in December to talk about the project. In anticipation of the project continuing we will be talking about the value of the work we have done so far and about our ambitions for the future of the project.

JumpstART!

In Bury St Edmunds we’ve been working with Jacqueline Davies on textiles and print making – T-shirt printing, making flags, decorating pillow cases and printed posters. We also worked with artist Alison Stockmarr, making pin cushions. After half term Jules Carpenter and Holly will work with us to make hats and trousers.
Our final exhibition will be on Tuesday 9th December at The Centre, St Johns Street, all welcome.

In Lowestoft the textiles module has been proving really popular amongst the JumpstART students both as an introduction to sewing and printing fabrics and in enabling the students to look into elements of costume design.

Students have been working with Jules Carpenter and Holly Scholfield as lead tutors and we have been fortunate to have as guest tutors Bee Eno (freestyle sewing) and Jean McIntosh (ceramics).

The costumes are coming along at a remarkable pace. Hats, printed t shirts, belts, beads and ceramic shoes. The student’s next challenge will be to design and make trousers, skirts and accessories (everybody needs a bag…)

We have had success in finding a great venue for our exhibition; called the Coconut Loft, it is situated on the site of the old salt water slipper baths in Lowestoft. It is well worth a view www.thecoconutloft.co.uk. They serve great coffee there too!

Clown Round

Clown Round’s largest funder Children in Need are having their appeal night this month on Friday 14th November. Last year our clowns were at the Children in Need event in Ipswich and this year we are planning an extra Clown Round session in the run up to the night.

Fidget and Hamish are also getting about. You can order our copy through us at [email protected] or you can buy them from Susan’s Florist in Walton, Cake and Catwalk at Jerwood Dance House or Sacred Earth in Upper Orwell Street in Ipswich, W Books in Woodbridge, Needham Market Post Office and Suffolk Canine Creche in Martlesham Heath. This story and colouring book is a great stocking filler for young children and all the money raised will go to the Clown Round project.

Rock Up

We’re back – music tutors Matt Shepherd and Bryan Hall are back at Colville House Youth Club as of Wednesday, 5th November, to deliver a two-year programme of regular music sessions designed to provide progression routes for young people making music.

Whether young people just want to try something new, receive one-to-one tuition or take part in jamming sessions, it’s all available via Rock Up – and specialist tutors in a variety of music genres will also be invited along, to make sure the sessions deliver the sort of music the young people want to make.

Training and skill-sharing events plus regular feedback sessions between musicians, youth workers and other professionals working with young people in challenging circumstances will ensure that we maintain best possible working practices and keep the project dynamic and responsive to the needs of all those involved.

Over the course of the next two years we hope to create showcase events and audio recordings – helping us to share with you the achievements of the young people involved in Rock Up.

Culture Club

The creative activities have been going well at Alasdair Place in Claydon. The group enjoyed a candle-making session led by artist Diane Smith. During their last session they all produced two Christmas cards and will be making clay decorations ready for the festive season.

The Sue Ryder Synergy Cafe Group in Forest Heath had a lovely clay session with artist Lorry Cudmore this month, they produced an array of clay pots and Christmas decorations; next session they will paint them

The creative volunteer at Gainsborough Library has continued working with the group, they have been working on drawing skills and experimenting with charcoal..

We have also recently recruited a Creative Volunteer in the Eye area ready for a new group of Carers and Cared for to start in the New Year. For more information about this group contact [email protected]
