Carers filmed in Suffolk help train mental health staff

Mental health staff have welcomed a pioneering new training DVD featuring carers from Suffolk giving their perspectives on how best to support carers.

Five carers from Suffolk have been filmed for the DVD and they set out how best to work with patients and their carers to get the best outcomes.

Staff from the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust have developed the training DVD as a Triangle of Care initiative.

The Triangle of Care was developed by carers and mental health staff to improve carer engagement in inpatient and community services. The approach recommends better partnership working between service users and their carers, and organisations.

An advert was placed in the East Anglian Daily Times last summer asking carers to come forward and take part in the training film. The DVD is being rolled out to staff across Suffolk and Norfolk.

Modern Matron Tara Brown said: “One of the challenges for staff is finding the time to keep their training up to date. We developed this DVD about carers’ needs as short sections can be viewed within team meetings and handovers which should help staff develop their knowledge and awareness with their colleagues.

“We’re really grateful to our carers who took the time to talk about things they find helpful, the difficulties they’ve faced, and the benefits of having positive support .The feedback from staff so far has been very positive.”

The “Perspectives of Carers” DVD was developed by CSV Media in Ipswich and Suffolk Family Carers, working with the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

The DVD is made up of nine different sections, each lasting five minutes.
